Steel Weight Calculator
Calculate the weight of TMT reinforcement steel bars accurately using the industry-standard engineering formula.
The Golden Formula: D²/162
"Precision in reinforcement is the safety of your structure."
Engineering Fact
The value 162.2 is derived from the density of mild steel (7850 kg/m³) and the area of a circle. Small variations in diameter can lead to huge weight differences over a high-rise project.
Deep Dive: TMT Reinforcement Weight & Quality
Steel is the backbone of modern construction, providing the tensile strength that concrete lacks. In India, TMT (Thermo-Mechanically Treated) bars are the industry standard for everything from residential homes to suspension bridges. However, steel is the most expensive material on a construction site, often sold in Tonnes or Quintals. Accuracy in weight calculation isn't just about math—it's about financial security.
Standard TMT Bar Weight Chart (IS 1786)
According to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), here are the theoretical weights for the most common reinforcement diameters.
| Diameter (mm) | Weight/Meter (kg) | Weight/Bar (12m) |
|---|---|---|
| 8 mm | 0.395 kg | 4.74 kg |
| 10 mm | 0.617 kg | 7.40 kg |
| 12 mm | 0.888 kg | 10.66 kg |
| 16 mm | 1.578 kg | 18.94 kg |
| 20 mm | 2.466 kg | 29.60 kg |
How to Identify High-Quality TMT Bars
Rib Pattern
High-quality TMT bars should have uniform, sharp ribs. These ribs are what create the mechanical bond between steel and concrete. Flattened ribs mean the bar was rolled while too cold.
Ductility (Bend Test)
The "D" in Fe500D stands for ductility. A bar should be able to bend 180° without showing any surface cracks. This is critical for earthquake resistance.
Common On-Site Fraud Awareness
- Under-size Rolling: Some local brands produce "undersize" bars (e.g., a 12mm bar that is actually 11.2mm). While they look similar, their load-carrying capacity is significantly reduced.
- The "Rust" Myth: While heavy scaling rust is bad, a fine layer of brown rust (called patina) actually improves the bond with concrete. Don't reject bars just for minor surface color.
- Bundle Weight: Always weigh at least 5% of bundles on a calibrated digital scale to verify the supplier's challan.
