Before mixing, fill a glass with sand and water. If more than 8% silt settles at the top, wash the sand. High silt causes the "spider-web" cracks seen on low-quality walls.

Professional Guide to Plastering Quantities (2025)

Plastering is the process of applying a thin layer of cement-sand mortar to walls and ceilings. Its primary purpose is to provide a smooth, aesthetic finish for painting while also protecting the brickwork from environmental factors like rain and moisture. In Indian construction, the quality of plaster determines the longevity of the house. Our Plastering Calculator accounts for the "Dry Volume Expansion" and "Wastage Factor" to give you the most accurate bill of materials.

Standard Plaster Thickness Matrix

12mm Internal Plaster

Applied to the "face" of the wall. Uses a 1:6 ratio. Ideal for creating a level surface for putty application.

20mm External Plaster

Usually 1:4 ratio. Often applied in two coats (12mm + 8mm) to ensure superior waterproofing.

The Science: Converting Wet to Dry Volume

One of the most common errors in masonry is assuming that 1 m³ of wet plaster requires 1 m³ of dry material. In reality, when water is added, the volume of the mix shrinks as cement grains occupy the voids in sand.

The Engineering Multiplier

We use a factor of 1.33 to 1.35 to account for this shrinkage and "Bulking of Sand". If you are using wet sand from a riverbed, the volume might appear even higher due to moisture expansion.

How to Prevent Plaster Cracks

  1. Curing: Water the wall twice daily for at least 7 days. This allows the heat of hydration to escape without cracking.
  2. Chicken Mesh: Apply wire mesh at the junction of RCC columns and brick walls to prevent "structural cracks" caused by different expansion rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much cement is needed for 100 sq.ft?
For a 12mm internal plaster (1:6), you will need approximately 1.5 to 1.8 bags of cement and 8.5 to 10 cubic feet of sand. This varies slightly based on wastage.
Why does plaster sound hollow when tapped?
This "debonding" usually happens if the brick wall wasn't watered properly before plastering. The dry bricks soak up the water from the mortar too quickly, preventing a strong bond.
