Brick Calculator

Calculate bricks, cement, and sand for partition and main walls using standard Indian building codes.

"Precision in every course: estimating bricks like a pro."

9" Main Wall 100 bricks / 10 sqft
4.5" Partition 50 bricks / 10 sqft
Mortar Joint 10mm (Standard)

Pro-Tip: Cubic Metre Standard

In most professional estimates, we use 500 modular bricks for 1 cubic metre of brickwork. This includes the mortar volume. If using traditional bricks, this number increases to ~550.

Ultimate Guide to Brick Work Calculation (2025)

Estimating the exact number of bricks, cement bags, and sand trolleys for a construction project is a fundamental task for civil engineers, contractors, and homeowners. In India, brick masonry remains the most popular choice for building walls due to its durability, thermal insulation, and cost-effectiveness. However, a common mistake is ordering too few bricks (causing delays) or too many (leading to wastage and storage issues).

How to Estimate Bricks Like an Engineer

Our tool uses the Volume Method, which is globally recognized for its accuracy. The calculation involves three critical steps that every site supervisor follows:

  1. Determine Wall Volume: Multiply the length, height, and thickness of the wall. Always convert all units to meters for standard result.
  2. Account for Openings: Subtract the volume of doors, windows, and ventilators. Skipping this step can lead to a 10-15% overestimation on large projects.
  3. Apply the Mortar Factor: Standard 10mm mortar joints occupy roughly 25-30% of the total wall volume. Our calculator automatically handles this deduction.

Standard Brick Sizes in India

Type Nominal Size (mm) Common Usage
Modular Brick 190 x 90 x 90 Govt. Projects & High-rises
Traditional Red 230 x 110 x 75 Residential (9" walls)
Fly Ash Brick 230 x 110 x 70 Cost-effective Partitions
AAC Block 600 x 200 x 200 Lightweight framing

4.5-inch vs 9-inch Wall: Structural Differences

The thickness of a wall (known as "single dhaar" or "double dhaar" in local terms) determines its loading and thermal properties:

9-Inch Wall (Full Brick)

External walls or load-bearing internal walls. They provide better thermal protection (keep rooms cooler in summer) and prevent rain seepage.

~100 Bricks / 10 sqft
4.5-Inch Wall (Half Brick)

Used for internal room partitions. They save significant floor space and cost but should never be used as structural load supports.

~50 Bricks / 10 sqft

The Mortar Ratio Guide

A wall is only as strong as the mortar (Masala) holding it together. We recommend the following volume ratios for best results:

  • 1:4 (1 part cement, 4 parts sand): High-strength ratio. Essential for 4.5" partition walls and load-bearing columns.
  • 1:6 (1 part cement, 6 parts sand): Standard ratio. Ideal for 9" external walls and boundary brickwork.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bricks are in a 10x10 wall?
For a 9-inch thick standard 10ft x 10ft wall (100 sq ft), you will need approximately 900 to 1000 bricks. For a 4.5-inch partition wall, you'll need about 450-500 bricks.
Which brick is better: Red Clay or Fly Ash?
Fly Ash bricks are more uniform in shape, which saves 20% on mortar and plastering cost. Red Clay bricks are traditional and offer excellent thermal mass. For residential projects in Tier-1 cities, Fly Ash is often the more cost-effective choice.
