The Skirting Rule

Standard skirting height in India is 4 to 6 inches. Our calculator uses the room perimeter to estimate exactly how many extra tiles you need to cut into strips for the wall borders.

Professional Guide to Flooring & Tile Estimation (2025)

Flooring is one of the most visible and expensive parts of house finishing. Whether you choose Vitrified Tiles, Italian Marble, or Wooden flooring, getting the measurement right is the first step toward a beautiful home. A slight error in calculation can lead to "Shade Mismatch" (if you run out and buy a new batch later) or unnecessary wastage. Our Flooring Calculator accounts for every niche and skirting detail to give you a perfect estimate.

How to Measure Floor Area Like an Architect

To use our calculator, first measure the length and width of the room from wall to wall. If your room is L-shaped, divide it into two rectangles, calculate them separately, and add them up.

Expert Tip: The Cabinet Rule

Never subtract the area covered by wardrobes or kitchen cabinets from your total. Flooring should always extend at least 4-6 inches underneath built-in furniture to prevent pest nesting and ensure structural integrity of the furniture base.

Standard Tile Sizes in India

2' x 2' (600x600mm)

The industry standard for bedrooms and kitchens. Durable and cost-effective installation.

2' x 4' (600x1200mm)

The "Marble Look" tile. Ideal for large living rooms to minimize grout lines.

Comparison: Vitrified vs Marble

Material Maintenance Avg. Life
Vitrifed Tiles Low (Daily mopping) 15-20 Years
Italian Marble Medium (Periodic Polishing) 50+ Years

Common Flooring Pitfalls

  • Batch Difference: Always order entire material in one go. Natural stones and even factory-made tiles vary in shade from batch to batch.
  • Slope Management: In wet areas like bathrooms (1'x1' recommended), ensure a slope of at least 1:100 toward the drain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tiles are in a standard box?
For standard 600mm x 600mm (2x2) tiles, a box usually contains 4 tiles, covering 1.44 square meters (approx 15.5 sq ft). Always check the box label as some premium brands may vary.
What is the ideal wastage percentage?
We recommend 5-7% for simple square rooms and 10% for rooms with many corners or diagonal layouts. This buffer covers breakages during cutting and future repairs.
